Čakovec Museum of Medjimurje is housed in the Renaissance - Baroque palace dating from the period of Zrinski and Althan noble families. The palace forms the so-called Old Town complex together with the outer fortress and fortification. The complex is situated on the picturesque elevation surrounded by the town park, greenery and a moat as a remnant of the ancient impenetrable water castle (Wasserburg).
Today the Čakovec Museum of Medjimurje is complex, consisting of Archeological, Cultural-historical, Historical and Ethnographic departments as well as Art Gallery representing Ladislav Kralj Međimurec’s Memorial Collection, Exhibition Hall, special library and conservation-restoration workshop. The museum collection contains almost 20.000 items, most of which from Medjimurje.
Apart from the permanent exhibition, shorter featured exhibitions are regularly on display in the Exhibition Hall. In addition, several events are annually held and include Night of Museums, Autumn in the King’s Garden, King’s Cherries as well as the Young Curators project.
