Food with genetically modified organisms isn’t available in Međimurje, since it’s forbidden in the European Union in general. The majority of food sold in Međimurje is produced in Croatian farms.

Medications and treatments
Over-the counter medications can be obtained in pharmacies to treat minor health conditions, such as colds, headaches, fever or insect bites. There are pharmacies in most towns and villages in Međimurje, while in Čakovec there is also a pharmacy open 24/7.
In Međimurje and Croatia in general there is no risk of contracting a dangerous disease. Therefore, no vaccination is required when visiting. A tetanus shot is recommended, but not required for visitors to Croatia.

Be safe in nature
Watch out for ticks, when spending time in the forest or by water. It’s advisable to take effective repellents with you and to thoroughly check your body for ticks, once you get back from the forest. In summer, mosquitoes can be a great nuisance near bodies of water.

In Croatia, smoking is prohibited in all closed public and work spaces, as well as catering and accommodation facilities (unless otherwise stated). You must be at least 18 years old to purchase tobacco products.

Post offices are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays (Pošta Čakovec, Masarykova 28), in villages mostly from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and some are open in the morning and in the afternoon with a scheduled break in between. Phone cards sold at post offices and newsstands can be used at a public payphone. International calls can be made directly from any phone.
