Arrival options

Međimurje is the northernmost region in Croatia, bordering Slovenia and Hungary. Međimurje is generally well connected and has a good transport infrastructure. Apart from driving, you can come to Međimurje by train or bus. The nearest airport is in Zagreb, and it is the busiest in Croatia. At a distance of 110 km, it can be easily reached on a motorway. Note that airports in Maribor (70 km) and Budapest (275 km) are quite close as well.

Arrival by car

Arriving from Slovenia or Hungary, you need to pass one of the following border crossings:
Goričan – Letenye I
Goričan - Letenye II
Mursko Središće - Petišovci
Trnovec - Središče ob Dravi

Main roads include:
- A4 motorway connecting Zagreb - Čakovec - Goričan border crossing; near Letenye (Hungary) it connects with M70 (E71, E65) towards Budapest
- 209 state road connecting Čakovec - Mursko Središće border crossing (CRO/SLO), continuing towards Lendava/Murska Sobota and Bad Radkersburg border crossing (Austria)
- D20 state road connecting Varaždin - Čakovec- Prelog - Donja Dubrava, continuing onto D2 state road towards Koprivnica, i.e. Osijek
- 208 state road connecting Čakovec - Trnovec border crossing (CRO/SLO), continuing towards Maribor and Šentilj border crossing (SLO/A) towards Graz or A1 motorway (E 57) towards Ljubljana

Arrival by bus

Local bus lines connect the majority of villages and towns. Buses to smaller villages don't run on non-working days.

The website named
buscroatia.com was launched in 2012 primarily to provide useful information about bus departures and arrivals from almost all stations in Croatia, and simple access to information about the timetables of practically all bus routes in the country. The website is available in 5 foreign languages, so it is a useful source of information for tourists and it can make their stay in Croatia more pleasant.

Arrival by plane

Arriving by plane, you are likely to land at the largest Croatian international airport in Zagreb. Since the airport is on the outskirts of Zagreb, you need to arrange a transfer by bus or taxi to the city, the nearest train and bus station. You can then catch a direct bus or train to Čakovec and Međimurje. More information is available at zagreb-airport.hr

Bordering Slovenia and Hungary, Međimurje is also conveniently near the airports in Maribor (70 km) and in Budapest, at a distance of 275 km and easily reachable on motorway.

There is also an airfield for sports aviation named Aerodrom Čakovec in the village of Pribislavec, just outside Čakovec. It is a type of aerodrome offering occasional air traffic, flight training courses and sports aviation. Passenger and cargo traffic is currently not possible due to a lack of terminals. The grass landing strip is 1,100 m long, 42 m wide, stretches in the direction of 210°-030° and there aren’t any built-in lights for flying at night. Planes weighing up to 5,700 kg can land at the airfield, although larger planes could also land should the standards for a higher level of fire fighting service be met.

Just outside Međimurje there is also Varaždin Airport. The aerodrome is suitable for helicopters, as well as single-engine and twin-engine piston aircrafts. Business jets of all categories can also land as well as medium-haul passenger turboprops or jets such as the Q400.
