What is an eco-museum?
An eco-museum is envisaged as a journey enabling visitors to truly experience the identity and heritage of a place, lifestyle and culture, and thus keep alive the spirit of the local community and introduce it to the general public.
The idea of an eco-museum was developed by French museologists Georges Henri Rivière and Hugues de Varine in 1971, with the aim to create a new way of interpreting and presenting cultural heritage. Hence, the prefix ‘eco' does not primarily refer to ecology in this context, but rather to a comprehensive, holistic approach to arrangement and organization of this new museum type.

Therefore, the basic difference between eco-museums and traditional museums is in the organizational approach and the ultimate goal. A traditional museum focuses on an institution or a building where an art or scientific collection is presented with the aim of preservation and education. An eco-museum is a place that brings together diverse and multidisciplinary exhibits representing the identity and cultural heritage of the local community. Its objective is the development of that community and the preservation of their historical and cultural identity.
